Just in case someone?s interested in a quick ?less-than-10-days? itinerary through Laos and Cambodia I?ve recently returned from!
Main sights-nature-culture-local markets?.All that is possible in a tight schedule by using public transport and flying via Bangkok!
1st DAY Arriving to Phnom Penh in the evening hours via Bangkok from Europe. Taking the last public bus from airport to hostel right in the middle of Phnom Penh pubs district and close to River Mekong and all major attractions
2nd DAY: Full-day sightseeing in Phnom Penh (Royal Palace, Museum, Silver Pagoda, Tuol Sleng Museum, night market ? all by walking and only taking a tuk-tuk to the killing fields in the afternoon before heading back to night market and Chinese New Year festivities in the downtown on top of hill
3rd DAY Early morning departure to Siem Reap by Cambodia Post bus company (very reliable, cheap and including some comfort stops on the way). Arriving to Siem Real early afternoon, local sightseeing in town, pagodas, temples before heading for a sunset tour for USD 10 with a tuk tuk (return) to Angkor Wat. Enjoying evening at local night market in town & PUB Street
4th DAY: Full day sightseeing tour around Angkor (Sunrise tour to Angkor at 4.00am, then small and main sights in Big Circle plus Beng Mealea and on the way back to Angkor Banteay Srei too before sunsetting at Pre Rup on the way to a night flight ex Siem Reap Airport to BKK) Yes, long day but if you want to have contact details of the most reliable tuk tuk driver around Angkor, feel free to let me know as I can?t be enough grateful for choosing him!)
5th DAY: Arriving from BKK to Luang Prabang at noon ? Half day tour to Kuang-Si Waterfalls after checking in to the hostel. Evening: Night market-street food-haggling for some goodies.
6th DAY Sightseeing in Luang Prabang to main temples, sights and heading to the Southern Bus Station to get the minivan down to Vang Vieng. Arriving to Vang Vieng in the evening. Pub Crawl+night market
7th DAY HALF DAY around Vang Vieng by hiring a bycicle for NamXay Viewpoint for some hiking, then visiting Blue Lagoon and Caving on the way back to Vang Vieng for leaving with the minibus at 13.30 to Vientiane. Night Market at Vientiane, Food Festival at Mekong
8th DAY: Morning tour to Buddha Park and then visiting all major attractions back in town in Vientiane and Golden Stupa before heading to the Airport for the evening flight back to BKK (and further to Europe)
(Of course the itinerary could even be shortened in case you are ready to take the night bus services between the towns in laos or Cambodia, I simply decided to take the day services for peace of mind. Also, as an airline employee we are somehow ?bound? to fly standby on certain airlines, so I always had to travel back to BKK to get my connection flight onwards, instead of taking any direct routings from/to Cambodia and Laos without having a stopover in BKK).
Hope to assist you with some hints! Cheers.
