Inquiry Submission By Trudy C

I?m a Mum planning a trip to Cambodia & Vietnam with a 17 YO boy & 13 YO girl in November. It will be just the 3 of us. I?m flexible with a timetable but want to have an authentic experience which isn?t too costly.

We are flying into Siem Reap & plan to also visit Phnom Penn & then go to Vietnam.

My travel agent is suggesting flights from SR to PP then HCMC, pre arranged airport pick ups with Buffalo Tours in excess of $60 AUD a pop & hotels upwards of $100 AUD. Plus over $500 AUD for a day trip to Angkor Wat.

After having read these forums I?m now thinking that we should fly into SR, take a taxi or tuk tuk from the airport & then bus from SR to PP. Then take a boat from PP to Chau Doc, stay overnight & then bus to HCMC. Surely this is both less expensive & far more authentic? And many hotels I have seen online will even do airport pick ups for free?

We are not thinking fancy accomodation, it just needs to be clean, safe & relatively quiet.

I was concerned about travel insurance though – surely it covers me for hotels that I book online myself, but what about tuk tuks, taxis or private hires (the mini vans I?ve seen mentioned)?

And where would be the best locations for hotels? I?m thinking small places with balconies where we can watch the sunset & I can have a wine – as we won?t be going to pubs or anything (although street food & markets obviously appeal).

Any suggestions on people with experience would be very much appreciated! Thanks in advance.
