Like a kid in a lolly shop I was so excited with planning our trip to Cambodia because there was soooo much to chose from. Thinking maturity had prevailed I reduced my original itinerary to spending our 16 days just focusing on Siem Reap, Battambang with a few days in Kampot and Phnom Penh. Having now booked flights from Siem Reap I realise we could have probably spent the whole time in Siem Reap and Battambang. So with my tail between my legs I am hoping that some people will still throw me some tidbits of advice on the best options for a first timer particularly in regards to day grips from Siem Reap. I promise to listen intently and be eternally thankful. I think planning for our second adventure in Cambodia has already got items on the list.
Our current itinerary is Day 1 arrive Siem Reap at 9:45. We plan to drop our bags at our accommodation and do a little exploring in town, possibly a massage depending on how the overnight flight was from Brisbane to Singapore (hoping those extra dollars on Premium Economy pay off) followed by an afternoon trip after 4:30 (thanks for the tip BaldricandBaddles) out to the ticket office to purchase tickets going via Leu Thom Tmey and possibly stopping at Road 60 for dinner on the way back depending on how tired we are.
Day 2 We think will do the Small Tour
Day 3 & 4 We head to Battambang on NYE where we’ll stay for two nights. We hope to visit Wat Ek Phnom on the way, Phnom Sampov in the evening, do a bike ride in the countryside, explore the town and possibly see another temple on the way back to Siem Reap
Day 5 we think we’ll arrive back in Siem Reap by the middle of the day and then have 5 full days in Siem Reap. I like the sound of far too many places and experiences in Siem Reap so am helping people can give me their thoughts on reducing the number of day trips as there are too many. These are our options 1) Big Circuit 2) Beng Mealea & Koh Ker 3) Preah Vihear Temple 4) Kulen Mountain, Banteay Srei, Valley of 1000 Lingas (I think this one is a definite for me but will listen to other people) How would people rank them ? I know we could fit all of them in but I don’t want to ‘fit’ them in I would prefer to experience them with time and presence as well as spend time visiting the many things to see in Siem Reap that I have listed from trolling this forum.
Day 11 We fly to Sihanoukville mid morning and will get a car to Kampot for 3 nights. I haven’t finalised our thoughts for there but a visit to a Pepper farm, explore town and do a side trip to Kep for some tasty crab with a trip back on the Crab Shuttle
Day 14 we will transfer to Phnom Penh. I haven’t organised our transfer but as luck would have it day 14 is a Saturday so we have the option of catching the train. This appeals to me as train travel is a great way to see the country in a different but leisurely way. The minus is the time spent on the train reduces our time in Phnom Penh. What are people’s thoughts, train or car? We only have two nights in Phnom Penh as friends and family didn’t rate it highly but ….we can see there are things of interest
Day 14 afternoon and day 15 are in Phnom Penh. We feel that we will pay homage to the history and courage of the people of Cambodia and visit the Killing Fields which I imagine will be a big part of day 15 and may see us wanting to have some quiet time afterwards. We fly to Vietnam for 5 slower, chilling days in Hoi An just after 1pm on day 16 so really won’t have much time to explore Phnom Penh then though an early morning walk as the city is coming alive may be just the thing before we head to the airport mid morning.
Thank you again for any ideas which will be gratefully received
