A friend and I (in our mid 30s) are taking a very last minute trip to Cambodia over Xmas/New Year. We’ve only just booked our flights (arriving on 22nd Dec at 1:30pm and returning on 2nd Jan 2:30pm – both from Phnom Penh).

We’re considering the following itinerary:

22nd: after landing, fly to Siem Reap (two flight options – 4pm and 7pm. If we take the 7pm flight, we’ll be traveling light and will probably spend a few hours exploring the town – any suggestions?)

23rd – 25th: siem reap. Besides Angkor Wat, we’re looking at Banteay Chhmar, Koh Ker and Beng Mealea.

25th: evening flight (4pm) to Sihanoukville. Stay the night.

26th – 28th: Koh Rong

29th – 1st Jan: Kampot/Kep

1st: arrive at Phnom Penh

2nd: depart

This is a tentative itinerary but we’re looking at finalizing our bookings ASAP (I know this is already very very late and the better properties are probably sold out).

A few questions that I’d really like some input on:

1. Does a 4pm flight out of Siem Reap make sense? I’m just worried we won’t have enough time to go visit one of the temples that day and will end up wasting the day with transfers. Is a night bus a better option?

2. We’re keen on diving/snorkeling. Assuming Koh Rong is the right/best possible choice? I’m not expecting it to be great, but hopefully the best of what is possible.

3. I’ve read negative reviews on Sihanoukville, so have completely left it out of the itinerary (besides one night when we land). The original plan was to spend New Year’s Eve here, but giving that a miss. Would anyone feel otherwise?

4. While we’re not looking to party till the wee hours of the morning, it will be nice to spend New year’s Eve somewhere lively. I know Cambodia is a Buddhist country and isn’t big on Xmas/New Year and we aren’t expecting fireworks, but would still like to be somewhere that feels more festive. Is Koh Rong a better option than Kampot? We can swap our dates then.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated!
